Mitch Alboms, The Five People You Meet in Heaven

In Mitch Albom’s, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, the author centers the story around Eddie’s life, beginning with his death. â€Å"It might seem strange to start a story with an ending. But all endings are also beginnings. We just don’t know it at the time† (1, paragraph 1). The most important thing in this story that we must all understand is that although we may not know it, somehow our lives all have a common intersection. â€Å"No story sits by itself. Sometimes stories meet at corners and sometimes they cover one another completely, like stones beneath a river (16, paragraph 8). Eddie’s life ends tragically at Ruby Pier, the amusement park, where he has felt trapped for so many, long years, with what he thinks of as â€Å"a meaningless†¦show more content†¦The next person that Eddie meets teaches him about sacrifice. He was Eddie’s Captain when he served in the war many years earlier. He didn’t think the Captain had affected his life until he asks Eddie if he remembers the blazing hut that he had saved him from during that war. The Captain tells him that he was delirious and was seeing things as he entered the fire-filled hut in search for what Eddie thought was a small child. The only way the Captain could get Eddie out and keep him from burning alive, was to shoot him. The wound to Eddie’s knee that had given him so many problems throughout his life had been caused by his own captain. But without that wound, Eddie would have died in the hut that day, therefore, in reality, the Captain saved his life, but Eddie had to s acrifice his leg. Eddie also meets Ruby, whom the amusement park was named after. He has never met her before but she still their lives intersected with Ruby Pier. Ruby had hated the pier just the same as Eddie had. Her husband had built it and named it after her many years before Eddie came along. Still, this affected Eddie because without Ruby, the park would have never been built and Eddie would have never worked there. Ruby’s lesson for Eddie was to help him release the anger that he had felt towards his father his entire life. â€Å"Learn this from me†, she says, â€Å"holding anger is a poison. It eats you from inside.
